Priorities - Advocate for Funding for Professional Development

A priority of AALPD is to increase funding for Adult Literacy Professional Development to support the adoption of the AALPD Professional Development Policy Recommendations on national state, and local levels.

Objectives: AALPD will strengthen ongoing advocacy efforts by:

  1. Establishing a strong public policy advocacy working group committed to informing and driving the AALPD advocacy process;

  2. Developing authorizations, budget and appropriations advocacy messages, based upon the AALPD PD Policy Recommendations, and submitting those messages to the National Coalition for Literacy (NCL) for inclusion in the field's messages;

  3. Advocating for professional development messages at the federal, state, and local levels; and

  4. Developing advocacy resources (not already existing) to support efforts of others in advocating for funding for professional development.

Ways You Can Become Involved

There are opportunities to get involved at various levels of commitment throughout the process. Listed below are existing ways. More options will become available as AALPD progresses through the objectives.

Online Feedback Group
In order to carry out our objectives effectively, there will be times throughout the year when it will be essential for AALPD to obtain feedback on various advocacy materials. Examples include:
    • AALPD recommendations for PD language in WIA authorization;

    • talking points on the professional development issues to use in advocating for PD on state, national, and local levels; and

    • resources we will be developing with the NAEPDC like a web-based self assessment for state directors on the AALPD PD Policy Recommendations.

These will be sent via email (only as needed) to all who express an interest in leadership with AALPD advocacy.
2008 AALPD Advocacy Committee

The AALPD Advocacy Committee plays a critical role for the AALPD by collaborating via phone and email approximately every 5-6 weeks in order to move the advocacy activities of AALPD forward. Activities include:

  • drafting and discussing policy advocacy materials
  • making recommendations, and
  • identifying next steps.

Volunteer in other ways that you feel best utilize your strengths and talents.
